Give’em what they’re good at
People enjoy performing tasks that they are good at. Find ways to put your staff in situations in which they excel. I have a staff member who really enjoys organizing social events. It’s her job to provide input and plan staff holiday parties and get togethers. She is so excited putting these events together that her enthusiasm rubs off on the rest of us.
It’s not the destination it’s the journey
Once you accomplish a goal, typically you do not stay satisfied. People enjoy making clear progress towards accomplishments. Look for ways to support your staff on their individual development goals. Encourage them as they take small steps towards achievement. As you affirm their progress there are many opportunities for mini celebrations.
That’s what friends are for
Working with a friend makes time fly by. Provide opportunities for staff collaboration. Staff meetings don’t always have to be about the nuts and bolts. You can have meetings where the purpose is to build staff rapport. The best way to do this is off site. Take them on a surprise PD to the local bar and give them time to relax and enjoy each others company.
